DESCRIPTION:With the Revolutionary War in full swing\, Cornwallis had established a strong hold in Yorktown. General Washington called on General Rochambeau for assistance. The French navy\, under Admiral Comte De Grasse formed a blockade at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay to prohibit the British navy from assisting Cornwallis. SUMMARY:The Burning of Jamestown
DESCRIPTION:Exactly one-hundred years before the Declaration of Independence\, a group of rebels marched on Virginia’s capital and burned it to the ground in an attempt to depose a government they saw as elitist. Though the rebellion would fizzle after the death of its charismatic leader\, Nathaniel Bacon\, its impact would be felt in the courts\, the further entrenchment of slave labor in Virginia\, and escalating tensions between white frontiersmen and Indigenous people\, rippling far beyond the 17th century to the American Revolution and today. “The Burning of Jamestown” is an immersive walking tour\, led by merchant and planter Thomas Mathew\, on whose land the rebellion was first sparked. This event will take place on Saturday\, September 19th at 6PM\, it is hosted at Historic Jamestowne (1368 Colonial Pkwy Jamestown\, VA 23081). DESCRIPTION:It will be a day of dancing and music at Scotchtown! Join the Virginia Home Spun Dance Ensemble as they dance through the centuries exploring music from 1760 to 1860. Demonstrations will occur at 11am\, 1pm\, and 3pm. Each dance demo will be around 45 minutes long and the audience will have a chance to participate! While enjoying the performances\, learn how music may have influenced the lives of people in Virginia especially during the revolution and here at Scotchtown. After each demo\, join a special tour of the manor house where we will explore how music was an integral part of Patrick Henry’s home life and perhaps what was played at the wedding of his daughter Martha here in October\, 1773. \nThis program is included with the purchase of a general admission ticket.
