Through our advocacy and community engagement initiatives, we are able to have a broad impact on and support the efforts of others who are working in historic preservation throughout the Commonwealth. Take a look at how your support has helped us make an impact on Virginia’s historic resources and communities.
Over the past year, we’ve fielded over 1,600 inquiries and requests for help from 77 counties and localities in the state. More than 270,000 visitors have come to our historic sites, with over 30,000 people participating in special event programming. Our annual conference took place in Danville this year and brought together close to 100 preservationists to learn the latest advancements in the field. You make it possible for us to reach so many people and serve as a resource for individuals, local organizations, and state and local governments.
We’ve also undertaken major capital repairs, including a new HVAC system at Historic Jamestowne, new roofs at Bacon’s Castle and Smith’s Fort Plantation and a dune restoration project at Cape Henry Lighthouse that has been more than 20 years in the making. We have also begun preservation work on the slave dwelling and smokehouse outbuildings at Bacon’s Castle which should be completed this spring.
Our Most Endangered Historic Places list this year included eleven entries that shone a spotlight on current preservation needs in the state and helped us focus our advocacy efforts where they could make the most impact. The list, which featured nominations from local preservation groups and individuals, examined the threats facing Virginia’s endangered historic places and offered solutions for each.
These examples are simply a snapshot of impacts made possible with your help. Your support of our efforts, from restoration projects to fighting to protect historic tax credits, impacts everyone across the Commonwealth, and we cannot do it without you.
Preservation Virginia is committed to unifying the voice for historic preservation. Working with you, we are sharing examples of how to save historic places while revitalizing local communities. Donate now and you can make a difference for the historic places you love.
