DESCRIPTION:It will be a day of dancing and music at Scotchtown! Join the Virginia Home Spun Dance Ensemble as they dance through the centuries exploring music from 1760 to 1860. Demonstrations will occur at 11am\, 1pm\, and 3pm. Each dance demo will be around 45 minutes long and the audience will have a chance to participate! While enjoying the performances\, learn how music may have influenced the lives of people in Virginia especially during the revolution and here at Scotchtown. After each demo\, join a special tour of the manor house where we will explore how music was an integral part of Patrick Henry’s home life and perhaps what was played at the wedding of his daughter Martha here in October\, 1773. \nThis program is included with the purchase of a general admission ticket. DESCRIPTION:The Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission listed Smith’s Fort on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. As part of the celebration of our 250th year of independence\, Preservation Virginia’s Smith’s Fort is excited to offer a series of Archaeology Walking Tours at the site that will be open to the public. The tours will include a walking survey of the areas excavated\, a discussion of goals and methods\, and we’ll share some of the secrets the ground has yielded so far\, as well as future plans for expanding our investigations and exhibits. \nWe’ll start at the Manor House with a  review of the work done over the years in that location\, and then walk the half mile trail to the Fort Site for a discussion of the excavations conducted between 1968 and last summer. We will also share recently excavated artifacts that just returned from the conservation lab\, so we look forward to seeing everyone at the Manor House! \nIncluded with general admission or $5 on its own. This year we will be joined by our Virginia Indian Tribal Partners – the Pamunkey Indian Tribe\, the Rappahannock Indian Tribe\, and the Nottoway Indian Tribe – and we will also host the Library of Virginia’s LVA On the Go van. The day’s events will feature a 17th century house tour of Bacon’s Castle\, pop-up exhibits\, seventeenth century reenactors\, genealogy resources\, kids archaeology activities\, special mini-lectures\, and more! \nThis event will take place on October 17th at Bacon’s Castle from 10-4pm.
