The Homeschoolers Hands-on History Camp at Patrick Henry’s Scotchtown will immerse your child in exciting activities and lessons on one of the most influential figures of the American Revolution. Campers will learn about life in 18th century Virginia and leave with new skills in public speaking, hearth cooking, woodworking and textiles. The camp is open to children ages 9-12.

Activities for each day are listed below. The itinerary may be subject to change due to weather.

November 8

  • 8:30 AM – 9:00 AM: Parent drop-off and check-in
  • 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM: “Let’s Get Colonial”
    Children will make their own haversack and journals.
  • 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM: “Time to Get Woolly”
    Children will learn to card, spin and dye wool. They will also make sheep ornaments. 
  • 11:00 AM –  11:50 AM: “Let’s Get Moving”
    Children will participate in a nature hunt and write about what is found in a journal. 
  • 11:50 AM – 12:00 PM: Wrap-up
  • 12:00 PM – 12:15 PM: Parent pick-up

November 9 

  • 8:30 AM – 9:00 AM: Parent drop-off and check-in
  • 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM: “Puzzled at Baking?”
    Children will be making Shortbread cookies from an 18th century recipe and making their own 18th century puzzles. 
  • 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM: “Time to Groove the Colonial Way”
    Children will learn 18th century dances and participate in candle dipping.
  • 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM: “Time to Get to Business”
    Children will learn and reenact Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty” speech and participate in signing the “Declaration of Independence.”
  • 12:00 PM – 12:15 PM: Parent pick-up
