Marshall and Madeira

Nov 17, 2021

6:00 pm — 8:00 pm

Join us in celebrating Chief Justice John Marshall’s favorite beverage: madeira wine! Madeira is a fortified wine produced on the island of Madeira off the coast of Portugal and was very popular in Early Republic Virginia because it could withstand the hot climate. We invite you to join us on November 17th from 6-8pm for a tasting of 5-6 madeiras led by specialist, Bartholomew Broadbent of Broadbent Selections. Learn about the drink itself, and then you will enjoy an evening inside the 1790 John Marshall House to learn more about the Chief Justice’s and Early America’s fascination with madeira. Furthermore, you will also meet our Curator of Collections who will give you a behind-the-scenes look at some special objects in our historic collection. All guests must be 21 years+.

Tickets are $75/each or a 2 for $120 and include the tastings, hor d’oeuvres, seminar, open house program, and a souvenir wine glass.

This is an indoor/outdoor (tented) event; details about capacity, social distancing, and face masks subject to change based on guidance from the CDC. This event will be adapted virtually if it is not recommended to meet in person.
