“Washington’s Heir: The Life of Justice Bushrod Washington” Book Talk and Reception

May 12, 2022

6:00 pm — 7:30 pm

Please join John Marshall House and Library of Virginia for a talk by author and professor of law Gerard N. Magliocca on the first published biography of Bushrod Washington, the nephew of Founding Father George Washington and an attorney and politician who served on the Supreme Court of the United States. In Washington’s Heir: The Life of Justice Bushrod Washington, Magliocca draws on his research as a fellow at the Washington Library at Mount Vernon to tell the story of Justice Washington, through which new perspectives on George Washington and Chief Justice John Marshall also emerge. The author uses Washington’s journal to reveal new information on some of early America’s landmark constitutional cases, as well as examining his inheritance of both Mount Vernon and of the enslaved people of the Washington family.

This free event will be held at the Library of Virginia. A book signing will follow the talk. For more information, please contact Elizabeth Klaczynski at elizabeth.klaczynski@lva.virginia.gov or 804.692.3536.

Pre-Lecture Reception at the John Marshall House, 4:30pm-5:30pm: Before the 6pm book talk at the Library of Virginia, join the historic John Marshall House across the street for an open house with author, Gerard Magliocca. Chief Justice John Marshall and Justice Bushrod Washington worked together on the U.S. Supreme Court for 28 years, aligning on court opinions for all but three cases. Enjoy an open-house visit to the historic 1790 house, meet the author, purchase and get signed a copy of Washington’s Heir, and view some special items from the house’s historic collection pertaining to Marshall and Washington.
