2022 marked Preservation Virginia’s inaugural Historic Places Art Contest. Open to elementary, middle, and high school students across the Commonwealth, students were asked to look within their local communities to select an historic structure, building, or place they deemed significant, and to interpret it in 2-D art. The contest garnered thirty submissions across six different schools. This year’s internal panel of judges were particularly impressed by the submissions, and evaluated the students on Theme, Historical Significance, Visual Display, Creativity and Design, and Adherence to Submission Guidelines. Based on the number of submissions, up to three winners were selected from each division level and their art will be displayed in a digital exhibition on the Preservation Virginia website. In addition, winning students received gift cards and memberships to Preservation Virginia, which will allow them and their families to visit all six of our historic site museums for free or discounted admission. The students’ teachers received a membership, too, as well as a free field trip to one of Preservation Virginia’s historic sites.
The Historic Places Art Contest will be an annual fall event at Preservation Virginia.
