Campbell County Training School Complex Wins $2,000 Grant from Preservation Virginia

October 11, 2017

Grant will help rehabilitate Assembly Building for community use

RUSTBURG (October 11, 2017) – Campbell County Training School Complex, Inc. is the winner of Preservation Virginia’s 2017 Preservation Pitch competition. The non-profit organization will receive a $2,000 grant from Preservation Virginia to purchase supplies to paint the exterior of the Assembly Building located within the complex.

The training school was one of 16 Rosenwald schools built in Campbell County. Conceived by Booker T. Washington in the early 1900s and partially funded by Julius Rosenwald, the Rosenwald rural school building program helped improve the quality of public education for African Americans in the south.

Millicent Nash, chairperson of the Campbell County Training School Complex Committee, presented the pitch on behalf of the school at the Virginia Preservation Conference recently held in Petersburg, Virginia.

“The $2,000 grant will assist us in continuing the exterior work on the Assembly Building and seeing this progress will be most gratifying to our community,” says Nash. “It will invigorate action for more community support and propel us forward toward our goal.”

In addition to painting the exterior of the Assembly Building, there are plans to make other repairs, including interior painting, floor refinishing and window replacement. After all repairs have been completed, the building will be used for community events and fundraising to help support the restoration of three other buildings located within the complex.

The Campbell County Training School Renovation Project is supported by in-kind contributions, volunteerism and the school’s more than 100 preservation partners, which include individuals, churches and businesses.

For more information on how to support the project, contact Millicent Nash at 434-258-4319.
